The new life for the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument
The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is near the Zeke burial ground. A mummy that was discovered there illustrates the historical importance of the place and the lessons that the modern generation can learn from visiting the area. The US Department of Agriculture took management into its hand in 1933 by the executive order of President John F. Kennedy. Under the Proclamation number 3467, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument got an additional three hundred and seventy five acres of land.
This new acquisition included the TJ site and some wilderness. After 1975, the United States Forest Service and the National Park Service came to an agreement about the administration of the monument. The Gila National Forest authority is now responsible for administrative duties. The elevations on the monument are from 5700 to 7300 feet above sea level. There are many rugged features that dominate the terrain. Some of the flora includes Douglas fir, Pinon Pine, Gambel’s Oak and Alligator Junipers.

Volcanic activity was responsible for the creation of the cliff. The Mogollon people were the dominant tribe between 1275 and 1300 AD. For some reason the dwellings were subsequently abandoned. These days the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is set up for tourist attractions. There is a museum and visitor facility. The place is run by volunteers who are specially trained to provide further information about the history and economic activities within the area.
There is a very serious purpose to all these changes to the monument.
